Cruising with a toddler can be both exciting and challenging, but these cruise tips for toddlers help ease the struggle of vacationing with small children.
With built-in entertainment, endless dining options and family-friendly amenities, modern cruise ships are better equipped than ever to cater to young travelers.
After cruising multiple times with my daughter, I’ve learned what works (and what doesn’t) when sailing with a toddler. Here’s how to make your family cruise smooth, stress-free, and fun for everyone!

Not All Cruise Ships Are Created Equal
While most cruise lines offer family-friendly features, some ships are better suited for toddlers than others. For example, newer ships from Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, and Norwegian Cruise Line offer full-service nurseries, toddler splash zones, and babysitting services. However, not all ships in a fleet will have the same amenities.
If you’re considering a cruise with a toddler, research the specific ship before booking. Some ships still have restrictions on pool access, requiring children to be fully potty-trained before using pools or water play areas.
Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean’s newest ships feature splash zones designed specifically for non-potty-trained children, making them a great option for families with little ones.

To Stroller or Not to Stroller?
A stroller can be a lifesaver when traveling with a toddler, but it can also be a hassle on a crowded ship. Cruise ships have narrow hallways, staircases and busy elevators, so a lightweight, collapsible stroller is your best bet.
If your toddler is comfortable walking for short periods and you plan on minimal excursions, you might be able to leave the stroller at home. However, if you’re flying to your cruise departure city or planning extensive shore excursions, bringing a stroller is a smart move.
Dining with a Toddler
One of the biggest perks of cruising is the endless food options! But if your toddler is picky or on a special diet, planning ahead will help.
- Request a Mini-Fridge: Most cruise lines provide mini-fridges in staterooms upon request. This is ideal for storing milk, yogurt, or snacks.
- Bring Toddler-Friendly Snacks: While cruises offer plenty of food, bringing a few familiar snacks can be helpful.
- Pre-Order Meals: Some cruise lines allow you to request specific meals in advance. If your child loves a particular dish, let your dining staff know, and they’ll often accommodate your request nightly.

Planning Shore Excursions
Choosing the right shore excursions is key to a successful cruise with a toddler. Many excursions involve long bus rides or activities that may not be toddler-friendly. Instead, look for:
- Beach days with shaded areas
- Short city tours with stroller-friendly paths
- Aquarium or wildlife encounters
In destinations like Cozumel or the Bahamas, you can often skip organized excursions and visit a nearby beach or attraction at your own pace. Booking a private tour or hiring a local driver can also be a great option for more flexibility.
Packing Tips: Less is More
Overpacking is one of the biggest mistakes parents make. Many cruise lines offer essentials like diapers and baby food for purchase onboard (at a premium), and some even offer baby gear rentals. To pack light:
- Use a service to ship diapers, formula and wipes directly to the ship.
- Bring a few favorite small toys but take advantage of onboard kids’ clubs, which often lend toys.
- Pack mix-and-match outfits to minimize luggage.
