The Ultimate 2025 Europe Travel Guide for the Off Season

As a frequent traveler to Europe, I’ve discovered that the secret to an unforgettable trip lies in timing. This Europe travel guide can help you make the most of your off-season trip. Many dream of summer adventures, but traveling during shoulder seasons—spring and fall—offers the perfect blend of comfortable weather, manageable crowds and authentic experiences.

Here’s what I’ve learned about exploring some of Europe’s most beloved destinations. Visit them when they’re not overrun with peak-season tourists. My insights are based on my travels in 2024.

Europe Travel Guide: Greece

I found that cooler temperatures prevail at the end of April and the beginning of May. This travel hot spot is less of a draw to the throngs of travelers flocking to Athens and beyond during the peak summer months.

The weather is a blessing for sightseeing in Athens. In my experience, tours are less crowded, it’s easy to get seated at restaurants and there’s really no need for advanced reservations for main attractions as entry times are plentiful.

We didn’t make it out to the islands, but the weather was a bit cool for swimming in Athens. However, it definitely ebbs and flows as weather can change at a moment’s notice.

Europe Travel Guide: Italy

I think Italy is basically crowded all year long but certainly, at the beginning of May, it was less so.

We visited the main attractions: Rome, Florence and Venice. While we were definitely not alone at the Colosseum or standing solitary at the Trevi Fountain, there were fewer people. Although, the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica were packed to the gills.

No matter the season, I recommend having tours, transfers and hotels booked in advance as well as reservations for popular restaurants.

Europe Travel Guide: Spain

I visited Spain in late September. Fall was not quite fully in swing and the beaches in Mallorca were perfect most days. We did have some weather but chose to do a tour that day and to shop and dine in Palma. The rain just added to the charm of the experience and served to cool us off.

Barcelona rarely gets below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, making it ideal all year round, but especially when the crowds are thinner in the fall, winter and spring.

While beach days are easy to organize, consider a tour to Valldemossa when visiting Palma or head over to the capital city’s stunning gothic cathedral.

Europe Travel Guide: Portugal

I love Portugal and the country doesn’t disappoint in the fall. The weather was picture perfect, not too hot (as the Douro Valley can get) and not too cold. Everything was just right.

Porto and the Douro Valley are ideal destinations in the fall. There are still loads of visitors, but nothing felt overcrowded. Tours were available and hotels were full but not completely booked.

Lisbon was the same. People out and about, stunning weather. It was an ideal time for strolling the winding streets of the city, sightseeing by tuk tuk or dining outdoors.
