How to Get a Passport for a Child: Step-by-Step Guide

Planning an international trip with your child? One of the most important steps is making sure they have a valid passport.

How to Get a Passport for a Child

Here’s a quick guide to help you through the process of getting a U.S. passport for a child under 16:

1. Gather Required Documents
You’ll need:

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship (such as a birth certificate)
  • A photocopy of that document
  • Proof of parental relationship (usually the same birth certificate)
  • Valid ID for both parents (plus copies)
  • A passport photo of your child (taken within the last 6 months)

2. Complete Form DS-11
This is the application for a new U.S. passport. You can fill it out online or by hand, but don’t sign it until instructed to do so at your appointment.

3. Schedule an In-Person Appointment
Children must apply in person with both parents or legal guardians present. Make an appointment at a passport acceptance facility—many post offices, libraries, and government offices offer this service.

4. Pay the Fees
Fees must be paid at the time of application. As of now, the passport book fee for children is $100, plus a $35 acceptance fee.

5. Wait for Processing
Standard processing takes 6–8 weeks, but you can expedite it for an additional fee if you’re in a hurry.
