A Family Adventure Bear Grylls-Style in California

I am going to have to put my adventure pants on — this might be too crazy for me — but I would do it for my family. Bear Grylls, the man behind television shows such as “Man vs. Wild”, has launched an adventure program for families and adults. The Bear Grylls Survival Academy offers a rare chance for a lucky few outdoor enthusiasts from around the globe to learn Bear’s extreme survival techniques. And, lucky for us Californians, it’s not far away. The academy is located in Oakhurst, Calif., near the entrance to Yosemite National Park.

First launched in Scotland in 2012, the Bear Grylls Team is bringing the adventure to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and further afield in New York’s Catskills and Colorado’s Rocky Mountains in Spring 2014.  The Academy, designed by Bear Grylls himself, will be run by his close team of highly trained experts and professional mountaineers.

Dates are scheduled from June through August for 24-hour adult, 24-hour family as well as the more intensive five-day course for adults. There’s even time to get that adventurous gift for mom on Mother’s Day — gift certificates are currently available.

Mother’s Day is one of the most popular days of the year to eat out. So finding a place where you can get a reservation is key — especially if you have a large party. Thankfully, Open Table has put together a fantastic list of restaurants that use its service, making it easy to book online, in advance and even from your phone. It includes a wide variety of options from steakhouses to oceanfront dining. A standout for me was Craft Los Angeles, one of my favorite L.A. restaurants. Find the list on Open Table. Is your favorite restaurant on the list? Tell us where your favorite restaurants are for Mother’s Day in the comments.

Is it too early to start planning for Mother’s Day? Maybe. But, for those looking for a unique mother-daughter getaway, check into the Shore Hotel in Santa Monica, Calif. It’s by the beach and, if you’re already in L.A., it’s a staycation with eco-friendly appeal. The Shore Hotel is honoring Mother Earth and mother’s around the world with a special promotion that pampers them both.

From Earth Day to Mother’s Day, guests who opt into the Green Clean program to protect Mother Earth will receive a complimentary breakfast in bed for their mom. As Santa Monica’s only LEED Gold certified property, the Shore Hotel was designed to be an environmentally conscious beachside getaway. The Green Clean program allows guests to minimize their impact by choosing to reuse their towels and sheets during the course of their stay. Shore Hotel guests also have Green Concierge at their disposal, the hotel’s own local expert on all things sustainable and eco-friendly.

Additionally, mom will receive a re-usable canvas tote for shopping at the Santa Monica’s Farmers Markets or the Green Light Shopping District.  From limiting emissions and exploring the city by bicycle, treating mom to a dinner at one of Santa Monica’s sustainable seafood restaurants, to shopping at certified green boutique shops, a stay at the Shore Hotel provides a wide array of options that treat mom and the environment.
